Description:

Full-time temporary support staff replacement position - August 2017 - June 29, 2018

Responsibilities:

We require a qualified individual with a minimum of three years of inpatient surgical nursing experience to join the School of Health and Life Sciences department in the role of Practice Application Specialist (PAS) beginning late August 2017.  The PAS plays an important role in supporting the integration of theoretical knowledge into practice.

• Under the supervision of faculty, organize the preparation and scheduling of curricular, skill-focused, experiential learning activities for students

• Demonstrate and assess psychomotor skills and decision making ability in the lab/practicum environment

• Model and demonstrate professional practices and assess skills via return demonstrations, for individuals or groups of students

• Assess student performance in the lab/practicum environment in relation to course outcomes and program standards using pre-determined tools

• Schedule individual and group activities (including additional work appointments) as required

• Provide additional assistance to students for skill development as required and as determined by the teaching/learning team

• Modify experiential learning activities as required to observe students’ ability to demonstrate practice capability and decision making, in accordance with program outcomes and the associated Professional Regulatory bodies

• Consult with members of the teaching/learning team faculty regarding students’ progress, especially students having difficulty

• Document observations and consult with faculty regarding students’ ability to meet established standards/outcomes

• Maintain student files for use by the teaching/learning team as required

• Environmental preparation and clean-up as required

• Continuous maintenance and cleanliness of the lab environment is performed on a daily basis

• Ensure lab equipment is in good working order and identify and report the need for preventative maintenance and repairs

• Supervise students in the practicum settings by maintaining on-going contact with field placement location, liaising with agency staff to promote student learning, observing students in placement setting, meeting with preceptor and/or student, assisting with problem solving, providing verbal and written feedback, completing paperwork and maintaining individual student files, reviewing mid-term and final preceptor evaluations as required, and providing input to teaching/learning team faculty regarding final grades\based on pre-established criteria

• Is self-aware, alert to changes in patient care needs, new skills expectations or new techniques

• Collaborate with teaching/learning team faculty and being present in the practicum agencies

• Access current evidence based research and best practices

• Remain aware of changing clinical practice; attend continuing education courses; update facilitation skills and engage in College workshops

• Attend pre-semester orientation and planning meetings; teaching/learning team meetings and Program Level meetings as required per semester

• Proctor examinations as required

• Maintain a productive working relationship with the health and life sciences teams and other departments within the College

• Promote good public relations through contacts with personnel from other educational facilities and health care agencies

• Participate in program promotional activities related to prospective students  


Qualifications:

• A minimum of a two year diploma and current Certificate of Competence as a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse in the Province of Ontario

• Candidates with a four year nursing degree are also encouraged to apply

• Five years of practical experience to include three years of experience on an inpatient surgical unit

• Excellent communication/interpersonal skills

• Able to work with faculty teams, students and others

• High level organizational skills for implementation of activities for students

• Self-motivated and creative approach to problem solving

• Ability to work independently

• Strong computer skills and willingness to remain current with advancing computer technology

• Maintain College of Nurses of Ontario Professional Standards of Nursing Practice, updating skills as required
