Counsellor – 1 Contract Positions (Up to 5 hours per week from Sept 2017 until March 2018) Location – Stratford


Conestoga College is looking for a collaborative professional to join a special project in Stratford.  The project involves delivery of an Essential Skills program to students facing barriers in obtaining or maintaining employment.  The incumbent(s) will provide therapeutic counselling from a strengths perspective to promote student well-being.  The incumbent enhances conditions for success at college by supporting students to clearly define their goals, further develop their skills, and establish connections with supports on-campus and in the community.  

  • Assist students to function effectively as learners and as individuals by helping them understand, prevent or overcome personal, social or educational problems that may hinder learning or their ability to cope with everyday living
  • Interview individuals, to explore personal or social difficulties or vocational/educational decision making
  • Refer students as appropriate to proper professional help
  • Facilitate discussion/dialogue between students, faculty and administration
  • Test and evaluate individuals to assist them in their personal, educational/vocational development
  • Assist administration, faculty and support staff, in a consultative role in identifying and dealing with student problems, and relationship problems among students


  • MSW (RSW), MSc. (OT), M.Ed., or MA in Counselling with a supervised clinical practicum
  • Registered member of professional regulatory body (e.g. Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario)
  • Minimum two years of experience in the field of counselling
  • Strong assessment skills and experience in working with clients with mental health issues
  • Demonstrated experience with short term counselling interventions and crisis intervention
  • Experience working with a diversified client base. Demonstrated competency in addressing issues of sexuality, disability, gender, ethnicity, class and religion
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team within a client-centred environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; written and verbal communication skills
  • Maintains professional documentation of all activities according to recognized professional standards and Conestoga College policies
  • Knowledge of relevant community services and mental health resources in the community
  • Highly computer literate with strong Microsoft Office Suite experience (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote)
  • Flexibility in work hours
