Contract position from January 29 - April 27, 2018

Responsibilities:

Conestoga College is looking for a collaborative professional to join our interdisciplinary Student Success Services team in supporting Conestoga students facing barriers to academic and personal success.  The incumbent will work directly in the Conestoga Residence providing therapeutic counselling from a strengths perspective to promote student well-being.  The incumbent enhances conditions for success at college by supporting residence students to clearly define their goals, further develop their skills, and establish connections with supports on-campus and in the community.  The Counsellor will work closely with staff and administration from Campus Living Centres to meet the needs of the residence community. As a member of the Student Success Services team, the Counsellor assist with quality improvement and will take a lead role in developing initiatives intended to enhance care for the diverse population of students living in residence at Conestoga College.

• Facilitate group counselling and psychoeducational workshops in residence

• Assist students to function effectively as learners and as individuals by helping them understand, prevent or overcome personal, social or educational problems that may hinder learning or their ability to cope with everyday living

• Interview individuals, to explore personal or social difficulties or vocational/educational decision making

• Refer students as appropriate to relevant professional help

• Test and evaluate individuals to assist them in their personal, educational/vocational development. Provide educational/vocational information to students or direct them to available sources

• Assist administration and staff, in a consultative role in identifying and dealing with student problems, and relationship problems among students  


Qualifications:

• MSW (RSW), MSc. (OT), M.Ed., or MA in Counselling with a supervised clinical practicum

• Registered member of professional regulatory body (e.g. Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario)

• Minimum two years of experience in the field of counselling

• Strong assessment skills and experience in working with clients with mental health issues

• Demonstrated experience with short term counselling interventions and crisis intervention

• Experience working with a diversified client base. Demonstrated competency in addressing issues of sexuality, disability, gender, ethnicity, class and religion

• Experience planning and delivering psycho-educational groups and workshops; strong facilitation skills

• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team within a client-centred environment

• Excellent interpersonal skills; written and verbal communication skills

• Maintains professional documentation of all activities according to recognized professional standards and Conestoga College policies

• Knowledge of relevant community services and mental health resources in the community

• Highly computer literate with strong Microsoft Office Suite experience (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote)

• Flexibility in work hours; must be available to work from 2-7pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays
